Oleta Godwin

–

Midlothian, Texas

Oleta George Godwin was born in Weston, Texas in 1925 to Roy L. and Janie Brimer George. In 1948 she married John W. Godwin, and they settled in McKinney, Texas where they had three children. Oleta and John moved from McKinney to Lancaster, Texas where they lived for 34 years and later moved to Midlothian, Texas where they spent their final years. Oleta was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a homemaker for most of her married life except for a time after her children were grown where she worked in the women's department at Head's Department Store in Lancaster. She loved to cook and no matter what ailed you, it could be solved with a pie or cake. Her grandsons especially adored her for her fried okra! While in Lancaster, Oleta was featured in the local newspaper for her famous peanut brittle recipe. She was also a very talented seamstress. Oleta loved to crochet, and as an active member of the First Christian Church she often donated her handmade goods to the church raffles. One of the stories she loved to tell was of how a lady at the church liked her afghan so much that she snatched it before it could be raffled. She enjoyed traveling to different states with her husband, sister's and their husbands. One of her later travels included a trip to California with her grandson Matthew to film an episode for the Judge Judy show (they won!). It was her first time to ever fly. Many holidays were spent at her daughter Regina's house enjoying the antics of her 5 great grandchildren. Regardless of how bad her memory had gotten over the last few years, she still smiled whenever she was able to spend time with her family and watch her babies (both big and small). Going back as far as the early 1930's, you could find Oleta helping her parents and siblings picking cotton. She had a hard, but good, early life and all memories were precious to her. Oleta is preceded in death by her husband John W. Godwin, sister Emma Lee Beyer, and daughter-in-law Kathleen Godwin. Her children, Gary Godwin. Gregory Godwin and wife, Cyndi and Regina McMillen and husband, Mac, grandchildren, Samuel McCaskill, Matthew McCaskill and Justin Godwin and 5 great-grandchildren, brother Clarence George of Dallas, Texas and sister Ruth Thompson, of McKinney, Texas, survive her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
