Midlothian, Texas
Edward Duane Hill, Midlothian, Texas, died peacefully on the morning of August 8, 2026.
Duane was born in Monahans, Texas on March 25, 1936. His parents were Maxine and Stanley Hill. His father's job with Southwestern Bell Telephone required the family to move frequently. Duane attended schools in Wink, Hamlin and Breckenridge, finally settling in Snyder where he graduated high school in 1954.
In the fall of 1954, Duane enrolled in Tarleton State Jr. College, graduating in the spring of 1956. In the fall of 1956, Duane began college at Texas A&M University (Gig 'em Aggies) and graduated Class of 1958.
After graduation, Duane began work for the Texas Highway Department in the engineering department in Abilene, Texas. In May of 1960, he met Sue Spicer on a blind date. They attended a THD picnic. Six weeks later they became engaged.
To fulfill his prior Army commitment with A&M, Duane reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for boot camp. After boot camp, Duane returned to Abilene and he and Sue were married January 21, 1961 and made their home in Abilene.
Duane received information that because of his civil engineering degree from A&M, he could apply for a transfer from Army to Navy Sea Bees and be a commissioned officer. He wasted no time making that application and was approved. He and Sue continued making their home in Abilene and Duane remained with the THD. They began to grow their family - two sons, Scott in 1962 and Mark in 1965.
In 1965, Duane and family moved to Grand Prairie, Texas as Duane began an engineering job with the City of Grand Prairie. In May of 1968, Duane heard on the radio that his Sea Bee unit MCB22 was being activated for service in Viet Nam. He reported to home port Gulfport, Mississippi two weeks later. Sue, Scott and Mark joined him two weeks later until he deployed for Viet Nam. Sue and children moved to Abilene where their families were.
In March of 1969, Duane and his unit returned to Gulfport and men were able to return to their "normal" lives. Duane returned to his job in Grand Prairie and Sue and children rejoined him there. In 1971, Duane and Sue welcomed their third son, Andrew. In 1981, the Hill family moved to Midlothian, Texas. By this time, Duane had opened his civil engineer's office and started a utility construction company. From his early career until his retirement in 2022, Duane has the distinction of holding his Texas Civil Engineeers License for over fifty years.
Duane and Sue enjoyed traveling with friends and family where the daily plan was golf for the men and shopping for the women. Highlights include Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. Duane was an avid powerlifter, competing in local and out of state meets. He enjoyed golfing with his friends and hunting and fishing with his family. He was a man of deep faith and served his church in various capacities including deacon and committees.
On March 25, 2026, Duane turned ninety years old. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, three sons, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
